Te Horo Prepares for Emergency
February 22, 2019
Te Horo residents met with KCDC, GW and WREMO about the formation of its Community Emergency Hub.

Community Emergency Hubs are about the community coming together to do what it can to help each other - people helping people with what they have available.

The Kapiti Coast District is home 52,100 people and stretches from Paekakariki in the south through Otaki in the north.
It includes the towns of Te Horo, Waikanae, Paraparaumu, Raumati Beach, Otaki, and Raumati South, and smaller localities such as Emerald Glen, Lindale, Maungakotukutuku, Otaihanga, and Peka Peka.

Much of the growth along the Kapiti Coast is on coastal dunes and river plains systems that stretch from Paekakariki into the Manawatu. The hazards facing the Kapiti communities range from earthquakes, landslides and tsunami, through to floods from the steeply-flowing rivers that flow down from the Tararua Ranges and smaller streams that haven't had any significant mitigation works completed.

Kapiti is connected to Wellington by one major road and a double tracked rail corridor with both transport links passing over fault lines, and alongside steep coastal cliffs. As such, the area's communication connections with the capital and Wellington's most direct link with the rest of the North Island are especially vulnerable.

Tsunami risk to the Kapiti Coast
The coastline of the Kapti Coast is vulnerable to a possible tsunami, and it is important to know what to do.

If you feel an earthquake that is either longer than a minute OR strong enough that it's hard to stand up, then get to high ground, out of all zones (past the blue line), as soon as the shaking stops!
If there is an official warning, then evacuate from the zones (red, orange or yellow) stated in the warning.
