Reikorangi Residents Make Most of Community Gathering
7 June. 2017
Good old Kiwi egg and spoon races still popular at the Reikorangi Residents BBQ Day.

Reikorangi resident's enjoyed an afternoon of games and fun at the weekend's inaugural BBQ organised by the Reikorangi Residents Association, despite being locked out of their own community reserve.

Julia Palmer, Residents Association chairperson, said the purpose of the BBQ was to bring the community together to meet old friends and make new ones and discuss projects for the association including use of the reserve land, currently under discussion with Council.
"The permit issued to a western riding club to use the reserve land expired in 2014 and an application by the club to lease the reserve for up to 30 years is being processed by KCDC."
Although the original permit states that public access must be allowed, the club refused access for this community event.
"Egg and spoon races continued regardless and community spirit rose to the challenge with improvised games instead of the proposed cricket match. The weather was kind, the company fine, and some great conversations started. With all this positive energy in our community, we hope to invigorate the social network that is so important in a rural area, and work towards achieving some community oriented outcomes for the people that live here. A playground at the hall is one example," said Ms Palmer.
