The Voting Papers for the 2020 election of Electra Trustees will have been received by eligible voters in Kāpiti and Horowhenua.
There are two vacancies and the four candidates are Neil MacKay, Kevin Burrows, Brendan Duffy, and Lindsay Burnell. Statements from the four candidates are below.
Electors can vote online or by post. Voting closes 12 noon, Friday 12 June.
Neil MacKay
“I spent twelve years on the Electra Board (2007-2019) the last three as Chair. I fully understand the strategies and operations of the business, the challenges in the electricity sector and the role, functioning and importance of a strong Electra Trust.
“Under my leadership Electra significantly improved its overall financial position and passed on increased sales discounts to the electricity consumers each year.
“I have an extensive background in governance, business and the community. I will strongly protect and support your interests to ensure the highest levels of service and valuable annual discounts. I am fully committed to maintaining local ownership.”
Kevin Burrows
“Electra provides a valuable service to the local community and the rebates it provides are appreciated by everyone and needs to be retained in public ownership. Prior to retirement I worked for the New Zealand Public Service Association Te Pukenga (PSA) and the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI).
“I have been on the board of the Electrical Supply Industry Training Organisation (ESITO) and the Governing Council of the Wellington Institute of Technology (Weltec). For the past five years I have been involved in Kāpiti Grey Power as President, Vice President and Committee member.
“I have a degree majoring in Economic History.”
Brendan Duffy
“The term I am completing on the Trust has seen us make some significant improvements to several of the Trust’s processes. We are very determined to ensure that the Board of Directors are skilled and will deliver the financial benefits to the residents in Kāpiti Horowhenua, whom we on the Trust represent. My focus has be on efficient governance, a review of multiple policies and ensuring that the Trust relationship with the Board is as focussed as possible. I fully support the Chair, Sharon Crosbie, and the Trust direction and am willing to serve a second term with your support.”
Lindsay Burnell
“We must remain community owned. As the longest serving and experienced Electra Trustee I believ in community ownership so each of us benefits from a strong reliable, local electrical network we own and control which returns a valuable annual discount.
“I have extensive local and regional government experience and enjoy many community activities. These keep me in close contact with our customers, ensuring that I bring your views to the table.
“Local Trust ownership or our lines company is essential and if re-elected I undertake to represent you with integrity and will ensure that you continue to receive your discount.”
