Over 100 kids and parents braved the weather to take part in Arbor Day planting at Queen Elizabeth Park in Kāpiti this week.
Organised by the Greater Wellington Regional Council, the Arbor Day plantings were attended by kids from Te Horo, Raumati South and Paekākāariki Schools.
Ross Jackson, Senior Advisor – Parks Community Projects, said the day was a great success despite the weather.
“I think it was a very successful day for the 100 or so parents and kids present. We were expecting 250 plus and yet we still managed to get 1500 plants in the ground which was a great effort. Having the holes predug makes it much quicker and manageable for the little kids and it was nice to see them feeling proud of their efforts. The Ranger staff always do a great job with the sausage sizzle and that was a nice way to finish,” said Mr Jackson.
Greater Wellington Regional Councillors Chris Laidlaw and Nigel Wilson attended the day and paid tribute to those who braved the elements to continue this important planting work.
