Locally directed movie The People We Love premieres at the Shoreline Cinema in Waikanae this week before a nationwide release in 26 cinemas throughout the country.

Kāpiti director Mike Smith takes the reigns in this very kiwi romantic comedy/drama.

The story – Aspiring young writer Maddie (Manon Blackman, star of TV movie Mistress Mercy) returns to her family’s coastal home after a series of writing setbacks. Soon she finds herself caught in the middle of family tensions. Between rekindling an old connection and discovering her mother (Alison Bruce) is having a secret affair, she realises that the story she’s been searching for may be closer than imagined. This tale of family and love was filmed on location in Wellington and the Kāpiti Coast. It marks the feature debut of writer/director Mike Smith (800 Words, Siege, The Brokenwood Mysteries).

Award-winning director Mike Smith says the film was privately funded.

“The movie is very polished. We had a really good crew on board, and the feedback has been very positive.”

It’s a great cast starring Manon Blackman, Neill Rea, Alison Bruce, Tane Rolfe, and of course the Kāpiti Coast.

Shoreline Cinema’s Peter Avery says “Mike understands the Kiwi psyche and directs with honesty and subtlety. ‘The People We Love’ was filmed in Kāpiti and has its Premiere, right here at Shoreline Cinema.”
