How many people imagine Petanque being a game for the older population? This could not be further from the truth.
Kāpiti Petanque Club president Kevin McFadgen says its a great sport for all ages.
“The advantage Petanque has over some other sports is the relaxed atmosphere, with loads of laughter, encouragement and banter.
“The inclement weather is definitely no hindrance to most of our members, who are often attired in gumboots, woolly hats and various garments to ward off the cold wind and the rain. It is an affordable, all year sport,” says Mr McFadgen.
The game is played with three Boules (balls) and 1 cochinet (like the kitty in bowls) on a lime chip surface or something similar depending on which club you are playing at. “I will not go into the rules of the game because I am sure that you would like to take advantage of our trial 3 club days for free.” You can use any of the club days shown below.
Mr McFadgen says the club will provide you with the boules and you will be paired up with an experienced player, who will give you guidance and of course, encouragement. Only one stipulation, covered shoes must be worn.
“We are looking forward to recruiting new members, both young and old. At Kāpiti Petanque Club, we have teenagers competing in a college challenge, playing for a shield every year. You may say to yourself, I cannot play because I have problems with my joints etc, but…..there is minimal bending, as you can purchase a little gadget with a magnet attached with which to pick up your boules. I am sure that if
you come along to test the waters, you will be pleasantly surprised at what you can accomplish.”
Mr McFadgen says if you haven’t already worked it out, yes, he is totally hooked on the game. “What drew me to it in the first place was the friendly atmosphere.”
Our club days are:
Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon -1 to 4pm

We would love to see you. I can assure you that you will be made very welcome. We are situated in Aorangi Road, Paraparaumu Domain, between the cricket and rugby grounds.
