A video (below) shows burnouts in Waikanae. Ōtaki MP Tim Costley says he is pleased Police are seriously investigating a large gathering of drivers involved in the burnouts at Waikanae on Friday night.

“I’m very sorry to hear someone was injured, but sadly I’m also not surprised. These people are being idiots with cars and I have no time for this behaviour. I’m glad Police take it so seriously but it uses up their resources which we don’t need.”

Mr Costley says “to anyone thinking of going to watch this: don’t. These people aren’t professional drivers. They’re riding on luck and it is the bystanders who get hurt. If no one watches them, a lot of this will disappear.”

Police have said an investigation is underway after a man was injured at the gathering of antisocial road users in Waikanae overnight.

Police were called to Old State Highway 1 about 11.30pm after reports of a mass gathering of vehicles.

While Police were present, they were advised by ambulance services that a man had been struck by a vehicle doing burnouts.

The man was taken to hospital in a moderate condition.

Kāpiti Mayor Janet Holborow says since last time, at the instigation of the Ōtaki Commmunity Board, there is work underway to try and resolve this.

“We’re trying to find solutions,” says Mayor Holborow. “It is a real challenge and the pressure these activities put on our emergency services is completely unacceptable.”

Police staff worked throughout the region to further disperse those continuing to cause disruption with their unsafe driving activity.
