The BIG DIG at Waitarere Beach on Thursday promises to be the biggest yet.

This annual event has been going for 41 years. The first Waitarere Beach Big Dig was held on Boxing Day 1985 and has been held each summer for the past 41 years, providing a highlight of the season for the people of the Horowhenua and visitors alike. The Levin & Districts Brass Band is hosting the forty-first iconic event in 2025.

Band President Chris Craddock says this year’s Big Dig would be just as spectacular as the past 40 annual events.

“Raised funds would assist the band with further purchases of new instruments for its expanding Youth Education Programme. The band has a big year ahead when in July it will attend the 2025 National Contest in Christchurch.

“The band hopes for perfect weather on the day of the Dig, under which conditions 1,500 to 1,700 people can be expected to participate in the event. The fortieth anniversary Big Dig in 2024 had the largest attendance ever recorded by the Levin Band,” says Mr Craddock.

“Once again the band is indebted to the Horowhenua business community for their continued support of this popular annual event, donating many excellent prizes.”

Band Musical Director David Maas commented, ”The Levin & Districts Brass Band’s annual Big Dig is a wonderful family event for young & old. Generations of holiday makers and locals have flocked to Waitarere Beach each January 2nd for a fun afternoon in the sun with the opportunity to win a fantastic prize for a very small outlay.”

Tickets $4 each for both the children’s and adults’ pits, on sale from 9 a.m. on the beach at the tent just south of the main entrance.
