Technology is needed in most aspects of our lives now. So the Kāpiti Council and our community are getting behind older adults with free help to use technology.
Digital Seniors hubs are opening across Kāpiti, from Paekākāriki, Paraparaumu, Waikanae to Ōtaki to provide free one-on-one digital coaching to all seniors to use devices and digital services.
This free service started in Paraparaumu in May, with kind volunteer coaches helping older adults in the weekly Digital Seniors hub at Paraparaumu Library. Feed back includes: “I’m so grateful this service is here” says a senior from Paraparaumu. “I feel stupid asking for help with my phone but Digital Seniors coaches are so friendly and helpful. Nothing is a bother for them, it’s amazing”.
The latest Digital Seniors hub opened this month in Waikanae. A team of volunteers will provide free one-on-one coaching to seniors at the Waikanae Library every Wednesday from 10.30am – 12.30pm. This new Waikanae hub started on 11th September.
Mel Haarer, Digital Seniors Kāpiti Service Lead says “thanks to Kāpiti Council’s funding to start our free help to the community, our hubs will now open across Kāpiti. We’re here to help all seniors use technology with whatever they need, and no question is silly. Seeing the outcomes of our service is just incredible. Connection and support are such a big part of what we do – sometimes it’s life changing. Our seniors leave with a big smile on their face every time”.
Digital Seniors is a charity working together with volunteers and businesses in communities inspiring collective community action to help older adults with technology. “All this would not be possible without the amazing support from Kāpiti Age Friendly Group, many community organisations and our amazing volunteers. We’re hugely grateful to everyone,” says Mel.
