Robert Lord’s skilfully chronicled New Zealand classic, Joyful and Triumphant, comes to Kāpiti Playhouse in November showing how to survive the train wreck than can be Christmas with the family.

As tables are set, meals are cooked, and familial relationships unravel, this warm and funny look at Kiwi life last century is sure to appeal to audiences across the ages as we take an intimate look at how the Bishop family celebrate four decades of Christmas Day’s from 1949 to 1989 with the meals and rituals the family enjoy.

Beginning early morning Christmas Day 1949 and spanning forty years of Christmas Days in the lives of the small-town Bishop Family as they struggle and clash and cuddle, the play moves logically in time through subsequent Christmas Days of the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, to conclude late evening Christmas Day 1989.

This original production went on to tour New Zealand before heading overseas to Australia and London and we are delighted to be bringing Joyful and Triumphant to Kāpiti in November 2022.
