It is likely the election results for Kāpiti Council will not be decided until this coming Saturday, a full week after the election.

Kāpiti’s election is being run by Independent Election Services in Auckland who are also running the elections for 22 other councils.

A spokesperson from Independent Election Services says the results will likely be with the Kāpiti Council on Saturday.

In the meanwhile Kāpiti has one of the closest Mayoral races in the country and it is still not formally decided.

Janet Holborow was leading after the provisional count with 7686 just 249 votes ahead of Rob McCann on 7437.

The number of special votes which could affect the outcome are not known. Independent Election Services says there about 14,000 special votes across the elections they are covering but could not say how many of those related to the Kāpiti election.

Special votes appear unlikely to change any of the Districtwide, Ward, or Community Board positions in Kāpiti.
