Kāpiti has had an abundance of entertainment options this year and the gift keeps giving with the soon to be launched production of Let’s Talk About ME!
Let’s Talk About ME! is a follow-your-dreams comedy musical starring Andrew London and featuring twenty-seven of his original and most popular songs.
Being staged at Te Raukura ki Kāpiti, Coastlands Theatre Let’s Talk About ME! is the brainchild of top class entertainer Andrew London and multi-talented writer, director, performer, April Phillips.
Playing the lead role of Darryl, Andrew London is based on the Kāpiti Coast and is a songwriter and satirist whose songs explore social and political themes and although humour and satire is very much to the fore (you’ll laugh your socks off), poignancy and pathos are often not far away.
“April and I grew up in the same town (Whanganui) and we have collaborated on a number of projects and it was April who said a few years ago that my songs would be great in a musical,” says Andrew.
“We put a show together Blue Eyes, a Frank Sinatra tribute which won awards and sold out at Circa for two weeks, so working together again has been a great experience.”
Andrew says a crowd funding bid to get the show rolling was incredibly successful and has got the show ready for production. He says rehearsals over the last two weeks have everyone ready and keen for curtain time.
The musical tells the story of Darryl Newman, a man with a broken guitar, two mortgages, and a mid-life crisis. His ambitious wife wants him to “get a haircut and get a real job”. His teenage daughter is an alien to him in a tech-driven, social media world. After an altercation at a wedding gig, Darryl is ordered to go to anger management. Over the course of a week, Darryl meets a diverse range of people who guide him towards a new perspective on life. He learns that the things in life that make you rich are not possessions, but rather passions.
The Kāpiti shows are the world premiere of this hilarious new and uniquely Kiwi stage musical.
