Friends Rally Round to Make Sure Concert Continues

Kāpiti Entertainment – Jian Liu, Martin Riseley, Andrew Joyce and Nicholas Hancox are performing in Waikanae.

The Waikanae Music Society concert on Sunday 13 September promises to be one of the highlights of the 2020 season.
Originally titled “Wilma and Friends” this concert has been organised by well-known violinist Wilma Smith, who for many years was the Concertmaster of the NZ Symphony Orchestra. Unfortunately, as she now lives in Melbourne, she is unable because of border closures to travel to Waikanae at this time, but her colleagues have ensured that the concert can continue by recruiting violinist Martin Riseley (Head of Strings at the NZ School of Music) to replace her. As a tribute to Wilma they have changed the title to “Wilma’s Friends”, a gesture that Wilma finds amusing and touching.

The brilliant pianist Jian Liu has an international reputation as a soloist and chamber musician. Joining him and Martin Riseley in a romantic programme of piano quartets by Mahler, Schumann and Dvořak are two prominent NZSO musicians, Andrew Joyce (cello) and Nicholas Hancox (viola).

The concert, in the Waikanae Memorial Hall, starts at 2.30pm. Tickets can be bought at: Waikanae New World or at Moby Dickens Books in Paraparaumu Beach. Door sales will be available or further information can be found on the website www.waikanaemusic.org.nz
