Kāpiti – how Age Friendly are we.

Kāpiti Coast Grey Power is setting a New Zealand first on Age Friendly Community Consultation.
Kāpiti Coast Grey Power is extending an invitation to all residents of Kāpiti to attend a workshop and have their say on the future of an Age Friendly Kāpiti.
The purpose of the workshops to gather information about what Kāpiti Coast residents believe an Age Friendly community would look like. Kevin Burrows, Vice President of Kāpiti Coast Grey Power says Age Friendly is a World Health Organisation (WHO) initiative and there are many countries taking part with hundreds of cities and communities involved around the world, including several cities in New Zealand.
“However, in New Zealand it is the common practice for the Local Body to develop the policy then consult with the community in a “top down” fashion. The process Kāpiti Grey Power is using turns that around by consulting the community first then developing policy and programmes based on the feedback. We have developed a good working relationship with Kāpiti District Council staff, and they have been very supportive in the process we are using. An online survey and focus groups will be held early next year,” says Mr Burrows.
An Age Friendly world enables people of all ages to actively participate in community activities and treats everyone with respect, regardless of their age. It is a place that makes it easy for older people to stay connected to people that are important to them. It helps people stay healthy and active as they age and provides appropriate support to those who can no longer look after themselves.
