Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.
Graham Priest, of Paraparaumu Rotary, has used his time and talent to make a unique donation to the Kāpiti Performing Arts Centre.
In 2004 the former chemist acquired a 1938 Austin Big 7 from his local friend John Beldham and together the duo spent the next decade restoring the vehicle until it was in a roadworthy condition. Graham, who has since moved into a retirement village, ran out of the time and space required to harbour a classic car. This situation led to Graham coming up with a cunning plan to benefit the community when departing with his beloved Austin.
The car was listed on TradeMe and sold for a healthy sum, enabling Graham to purchase four seats in the Kāpiti Performing Arts Centre. With the proceeds going towards an incredible upcoming community facility, the new Te Horo owner was inclined to bid.
“We are delighted with the support we have been receiving from the community; sponsorship has really picked up this year since building has started,” says Ben Kieboom, member of the Kāpiti Performing Arts Centre Fundraising Committee.
The Kāpiti Performing Arts Centre is currently under construction and will feature a 330-seat auditorium, a black box theatre, a dance studio, multiple recording studios and several classrooms. These facilities will be open for low-cost public use, creating a new hub for the arts in Kāpiti.
