The first ever New Zealand Chess Tournament for those with a rating under 2000 was a great success says Kāpiti Chess Club spokesperson Guy Burns.
“The six round Tournament played on Sunday 27 May at the Paraparaumu Library attracted 19 players – 4 Juniors and 15 Seniors – with 7 Kāpiti entries.
“Current Kāpiti champion Alan Winfield came 3rd. The overall winner was Jeremy Knowles from Upper Hutt, closely followed by the strong Junior player Ryan Winter of Wellington.
Mr Burns says the venue was a great location with members of the public popping in to see live chess in action. Those who played enjoyed the event and are keen to see it repeated next year.
