The Kāpiti Council has clarified that recent reports of cloudy tap water in the Paraparaumu and Raumati areas are not related to the boil water notice in Pukerua Bay, and that the Council’s public drinking water supply is still safe to drink.
Infrastructure Services Group Manager Sean Mallon says the discoloured water is likely to have resulted from work to fix a small leak on the main pipe that brings the water from the Waikanae water treatment plant to the water reservoir that serves the Paraparaumu and Raumati communities on Monday. It is not connected to the issues Pukerua Bay is currently experiencing as they are two completely different water supply networks.
“The repair to the main pipe involved turning off the water to the reservoir and draining the pipe, before turning it back on and flushing it out,” said Mr Mallon. “The main was then put back into service and this is likely to have stirred up a bit of sediment and trapped some air in the water, resulting in some homes experiencing cloudy tap water.”
All Kāpiti Coast public drinking water supplies are tested and treated with chlorine and high-intensity UV light.
“We routinely test the drinking water in our networks and the results are all clear. To further assure ourselves that the water is safe to drink, we have taken another round of samples across our network this morning and they have come back clear.”
