Quit your Job! Change your flights! Plan a prison break! Re-organise your life! Just do whatever you have to do to be on the summer’s hottest dance floor when Wellington’s favourite “drunken polka rock” band, The Raskolnikovs, join indie rock newcomers The Travesties at St Peter’s Hall in Paekākāriki.
The Paekākāariki gig is part of a six-gig tour for The Raskolnikovs, with dates in Wellington, Whanganui, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Port Chalmers. After fifteen years together, with three CDs and a vinyl EP under their belts, the band says they are “still playing that risky blend of gothic polka folk and rock n’ roll that no other band hit upon.”
With last year’s four-garage tour of Paekākāriki behind them, The Travesties are an emerging underground Paekākāriki band, with a Dunedin sound. With songs about cross-dressing and experts, guitarists Sarah and Tina describe their music as existential. “I was a nihilist before I joined the Travesties” said Miles the drummer.
“We don’t know the meaning of life so we may as well rock-out while we are here,” says Tina, the band’s main backing singer.
“This particular gig is going to be a blast for the Travesties. Last year we did a tour of the garages in Paekākāriki but this will be our first gig in a public space. We are looking forward to coming out of the garage and performing for a wider audience.”
