The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is advising holidaymakers to expect continued long delays as traffic backs up through the Kāpiti Coast.
Delays of up to two hours are common for motorists northbound on State Highway 1, with NZTA now advising them to alter travel times.
The Agency says northbound traffic has been very heavy between Plimmerton and Ōtaki as holiday makers leave Wellington for their holiday break.
Ōtaki is a particular choke point as traffic crawls through the town.
Today NZTA warned travellers to expect delays of up to 75 minutes with traffic particularly heavy in northbound lanes through Paekākāariki, and between Peka Peka and Ōtaki.
The next few days should see traffic numbers lighten somewhat but the weekend is likely to see big numbers back on the road for the new year break.
