The Kāpiti Council says it will be making it safer and easier to move between Coastlands and Iver Trask Place early next year.
A new signalised pedestrian crossing will be established outside Takiri House, at the Iver Trask Place and Rimu Road t-intersection, as part of the Council’s work to improve and increase the vibrancy of the Paraparaumu town centre.
Infrastructure Group Manager Sean Mallon says the crossing, along with other development on Rimu Road, will help to establish Rimu Road as the main street of Paraparaumu.
“It will improve connections between Coastlands and the recently upgraded Kāpiti Lights area, Iver Trask Place and the civic precinct, Kāpiti Road and beyond.”
Mr Mallon says the signalised pedestrian crossing will be push-button activated and will be synchronised with lights on Kāpiti Road to ensure traffic flows smoothly.
Work to establish the crossing won’t commence until the New Year and is expected to take around six months to complete, subject to favourable weather.
“This is a substantial infrastructure project and there will be some disruption along the way but we’re working with affected parties to work out a plan to minimise this as much as possible,” says Mr Mallon.
Next week, Sunday 10 to Wednesday 13 December, Council contractors will be working near the Iver Trask Place and Rimu Road t-intersection to check for the location of underground services.
This work will be carried out at night between 6pm and 6am and will require the Council to close off a section of Rimu Road and divert traffic via the Coastlands carpark to enable contractors to work in the area safely. People wanting to access Iver Trask Place will need to use the Ngahina Street entrance off Kāpiti Road.
“We need to do this work now to avoid unnecessary delays to the construction programme when it gets underway early next year,” Mr Mallon says.
“Motorists coming off State Highway 1 and travelling down Ihakara Street and onto Rimu Road to get to Kāpiti Road are advised to consider using an alternative route while this investigation work is carried out.”
