With plenty of celebrations ahead it is important for employers to help staff know their limits this festive season.
Employment specialist Julia Palmer of StarPeople says good employers work hard to provide safe, healthy workplaces for their employees. She says staff can sometimes be in social settings – in or out of work – where alcohol may be consumed. She says even if you have a no alcohol policy you can inform staff how they can drink responsibly.
Ms Palmer says the science indicates men can consume three standard drinks over two hours and still be under the legal 250mcg drink-drive limit. For women that’s two standard drinks over a two-hour period.
Backed by the Institute of Environmental Science & Research (ESR), the Rule of Thumb Poster was developed by Hospitality New Zealand, in partnership with the Brewers Association, to clear up any confusion around the lower drink-drive limit.
Ms Palmer says there’s a handy Rule of Thumb poster to print out and hang on your staff notice board over the festive season.

“If anyone is in any doubt, it’s best not to drink at all before driving.”
