For those who have been wondering about the large number of helicopter trips to and from Kāpiti Island in the last few days – the mystery is solved.
Lee Barry, Ranger for Department of Conservation says there is a major upgrade underway on the Wilkinson Track, which leads to the summit of Kāpiti Island Nature Reserve.
“Contractors are using helicopters to transport 140 tonnes of gravel to resurface muddy and eroded sections of track. We aim to have the track upgrade complete by the end of May.
“Further helicopter trips to the island will be needed over the next few weeks as we transport materials required for protecting a nesting tītī colony near the island’s summit, and for repainting the historic Whare,” says Mr Barry.
