Ōtaki Kite Festival Takes Off

Come fly with us at the Ōtaki Kite Festival held annually at our stunning Ōtaki Beach on the Kāpiti Coast, just one hour’s drive north of Wellington. 2017 will be the 5th kite festival presented by the Ōtaki Promotions Group Inc.

Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th March 2017 kites flying 11am-4pm (tide & weather/wind dependent) plus entertainment 4pm-5pm

Fun for all the family, this free event brings together NZKA kite fliers from around New Zealand, Peter Lynn Kites of Ashburton and international guest kite fliers to showcase their artistry, design and flying skills. Our 2016 festival saw an audience of around 18,000 over the two days enjoying a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
Spectacular kites of all shapes, sizes and styles thrill those viewing from the beach, above the dunes and the Pavilion roof. Expect to be delighted by the sight of massive inflatable kites, stained glass window and bug kites through to tiny fluttering seagull kites.

Festival Food & Drink, Markets Stalls plus Kids’ Entertainment Area
Visit our food and drink vendors located around the site and browse the market stalls to find something special to take home! Be sure to look out for the kiddies’ entertainment area too, including bouncy castle, merry-go-round and face painting.

Entertainment
We’re well known for entertaining our visitors both on and off the beach at the Ōtaki Kite Festival. All entertainment and activities are weather dependant and may vary accordingly. Check our Facebook page as well for updates.

On the beach Along with the spectacular event and inflatable kites flying, come along and check out the Rokkaku Kite Fighting Challenge; a multi-round inter-business battle in the sky with up to 12 kites; the last remaining kite flying earning the highest points. As well, there may be periodic stunt kite flying demonstrations.

For the children – look out for the inflatable train and kite buggy rides. The Harcourts Big Dig will be happening on Saturday from 11am-12noon.

We hope to see Ōtaki Surf Lifesaving Club share some of their on-water rescue practices over the weekend too.

Off the beach throughout both days the stage entertainment line-up will include local band Hottie on Saturday (2pm) and Wairarapa Brit-pop post-punk band Spank on Sunday (2pm). The Mukume Taiko Drummers return for another thrilling performance on Sunday at 3pm on the Pavilion Lawn.
