New works beginning this week will see some rerouting of traffic near Peka Peka.
At the northern end of the new Expressway near Peka Peka, the route will transition from two lanes in each direction, to one lane in each direction as it connects to the existing state highway towards Ōtaki.
Changes are also being made in this area so the project team can work around traffic to build these connections.
New SH1 route
A temporary re-route of SH1 traffic in October is part of those changes. This will see both north and southbound SH1 traffic travelling along a newly built local link road and over the bridge above the Expressway route, until the Expressway opens, so work can continue around the existing SH1 area.
To reach Peka Peka Road coming from the north you’ll need to travel south of Peka Peka Road then north again via the link road. From Te Horo/Ōtaki – continue on the southbound SH1 route until the new link road turnoff on the right and then travel north back to the intersection with Peka Peka Road.
To travel south from Peka Peka and Te Kowhai Roads there will be a local-user southbound route open for you to use, over the bridge to the south, while SH1 northbound traffic travels north.
To reach Hadfield Road coming from the north continue on the southbound SH1 route and turn left into Hadfield Road as you do now. (Once both north and southbound SH1 traffic shifts to the link road route, the road to the north of the street will be closed.)
To reach Hadfield Road coming from the south continue along the northbound SH1 route and follow the link road left. Turn right through the turn bay at the island and continue north to Hadfield Rd.
LOCAL ROADS DURING STAGE 2 (all SH1 traffic re-routed until the Expressway opens)
To reach Peka Peka Road and Te Kowhai Road coming from the north you’ll follow the new SH1 route and turn right at the intersection with Te Kowhai Road or Peka Peka Road.
To travel south from Peka Peka and Te Kowhai Roads you’ll use the new SH1 route over the bridge to the south.
To reach Hadfield Road coming from the north follow the new SH1 route along the link road past the top of Te Kowhai and Peka Peka Roads, turn left after the bridge to the south and drive north to the entry of Hadfield Road.
To reach Hadfield Road coming from the south continue along the northbound SH1 route and follow the link road left. Turn right through the turn bay at the island and continue north to Hadfield Rd.
