It is often the case that events get hyped up and then fail to deliver but not this was not one of them. I can see the Ōtaki Kite Festival going from strength to strength as it carves out its iconic space in the regional events calendar.
Ōtaki Beach is as far away as you can get in our region from the Wairarapa and Island Bay but there were visitors from there on the weekend and everywhere in between.
The Ōtaki Kite Festival is a whole weekend of free family fun and it was great to see literally thousands of people taking advantage of this beautiful location. Besides the kites there were shows and stalls for a wider entertainment experience.
The event is of regional significance and again has attracted huge crowds from across the Greater Wellington region. I can see the Kite Festival continuing to grow and the economic and cultural benefits to Ōtaki, Kāpiti, and the wider region will be significant. Above all the Kite Festival brings out the kid in all of us with its spectacular kites, colour, and atmosphere.
