Ōtaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed news that Ōtaki is likely to be included in the rollout of Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB).
“I’m delighted that UFB will be extended further across New Zealand, and that Minister Amy Adams says Ōtaki is now ‘strong contender’ to be included.”
Mr Guy welcomed the announcement in Waikanae recently where Chorus workers are busy installing UFB.
Under National’s new policy, UFB rollout will be expanded from a target of 75 per cent of New Zealanders to 80 per cent.
“The timing will depend on a competitive bid process, which will take into account the cost of deployment, strength of local demand, and support from local authorities.
“I will be working closely with both the Kāpiti Coast District Council and Horowhenua District Council so that we prepare strong bids, and get this rollout underway as soon as possible.
“UFB offers major potential for schools, medical care and the many small businesses in the area who need to be connected with the wider world.
“The National Party has already announced $150 million to improve broadband coverage into rural areas that will continue to benefit parts of the Ōtaki electorate.
“Along with Transmission Gully and the Kāpiti Expressway this will encourage more people and businesses to base themselves here.”
UFB has already been installed passed 18% of premises in Levin and 17% in Kāpiti. One of four planned Rural Broadband Initiative towers has also been built to help connect rural areas outside the main townships.
