This weekend marks the start of GirlGuiding New Zealand’s major fundraiser the sale of Guide Biscuits.
Thousands of Pippins, Brownies, Guides and Rangers, their families and volunteers will be out in force near shops and supermarkets, in malls and in neighbourhoods selling their iconic biscuits baked by Griffin’s. At $3.50 per packet, sales of the biscuits provide over 55% of the revenue needed to fund GirlGuiding NZ each year.
A small quantity of imperfect (but safe to eat) Original biscuits has been discovered and Griffin’s is in the process of withdrawing those cartons from sale. The imperfections are in the form of small amounts of cooked product residue marking the bottom of the biscuits. By far the majority of the Originals, and all the Guide Chocs and Mini Choc biscuits, are not affected and are all perfect and available for sale from Saturday, 1 March onwards.
GirlGuiding New Zealand’s chief executive, Susan Coleman, says, “We’re disappointed about this, but have moved quickly, in conjunction with Griffin’s, to deal with it. . Griffin’s has already withdrawn two small batches from sale and the third and final one is currently being withdrawn.
It’s important to us that our customers enjoy high quality biscuits, so if they discover an imperfection in their biscuits we’re asking them to return the packet to their local Guiding group and the biscuits can either be replaced like for like if they have some available, or with a delicious packet of Guide Chocs or Minis. Buyers can also call Griffin’s on 0800 GRIFFINS 0800 474 338.”
“New Zealanders should be reassured that these batches are only a small proportion of Guide biscuits sold during biscuit season. In total there are over 30,000 cartons of quality Originals for sale. With 15 packets in each box, that’s 450,000 packets of biscuits that will be for sale during Biscuit Season, as well as all those fabulous Chocs and Minis.
“We are looking forward to a fun, and profitable season this March. We have been selling Guide Biscuits for the last 57 years and they’re a very important part of what makes Guiding in New Zealand so memorable,” says Susan Coleman.
