Firstly, Mahara Gallery has teamed up with WEA to offer a course of illustrated talks in the gallery by renowned arts writer, painter and curator Peter F. Ireland.
FROM PLATO to NATO:
The course deals with broad outlines relating to world art in general and explores examples from New Zealand.

Looking at the role of the artist in society, from ritual art making to self expression
2.August 9:Art and the Spiritual
Considering the relationship of art-making and the numinous
3.August 23:Art and Society
Examining the place of art in society from tribalism to democracy
4.September 6:Art and Collecting
Looking at this phenomenon & the rise of public & dealer galleries in the marketplace
5.September 20: Art and Colonisation
Examining the dilemma of the colony in terms of connection and development, and in NZ the rise of contemporary Maori art from the mid 1950s
6.October 4:Art and Power
Considering the use of art made by the powerful, and how from the later 19th century the new medium of photography began turning the tables in its documentary tradition
All sessions take place at Mahara Gallery, on Friday nights, 7.15-8.30pm.

Event takes place at Mahara Gallery on Sunday August 4th at 12 noon, and will be preceded by a warming soup and bread roll.
This is the first special event in the Friends of Mahara 2013-14 programme.

WAIKANAE CHILDREN’S ART ON THE CAMELLIA:
New exhibition running at Mahara Gallery from 5 August:
Mahara is mounting a children’s art exhibition in the gallery of around 50 artworks on the beautiful camellia. Every year children from years one to eight in two local schools: Waikanae and Kapanui Primary, make art to support and promote the Annual Camellia Show of the Kāpiti Branch of the NZ Camellia Society. This year’s Annual Show will take places at Waikanae Memorial Hall on Saturday 24 August.
