The Kāpiti Chamber of Commerce is asking that employers take part in a ‘business stocktake’ project to uncover attitudes and beliefs towards the employment of youth, and to gain a better understanding of what opportunities are available now and in the near future for youth.
The first stage is a ‘youth employment’ survey. Over 1,000 Kāpiti business people have been emailed with an invitation to participate in an online survey. In conjunction with a similar but face-to-face survey in Ōtaki, the aim is to find out what businesses think about employing youth so they can be better ready, willing and able to work.
The business stocktake project has been commissioned by the Kāpiti Youth Pathways Working Group, supported by the Kāpiti Coast District Council.
“We’re asking all current, past and intending future employers in the District to get behind this project” says Chamber Chairman Mark Ternent. “The Working Group will be able to use the information gained to help guide what happens next, and to help connect business, community and youth in a meaningful way that gets results and which helps reduce youth unemployment. It is also likely that the information gathered will be collated into some sort of a knowledge base for young people exploring local jobs or careers, or employers who want to get involved in helping young people realise their potential.”
