Nearly $91,000 has been raised by the Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event in Kāpiti, making a significant contribution to supporting those in the Kāpiti community affected by cancer.
Last night team captains gathered to hear the fundraising total and see photos of the event highlights.
Event coordinator Janie Walker says the teams have been waiting to hear the total and now know how their efforts will help.
“The drive everyone has had to fundraise and get involved in the event has been incredible,” says Ms Walker. “Now they can see that their hard work has paid off and that collectively they can make a really huge difference.”
The event, held 9-10 March at Athletics Park Paraparaumu, saw 36 teams and over 500 participants fundraise prior to the event, then walk in relay for 17 hours. Highlights included a candle tribute ceremony, a diverse lineup of entertainment and activities and a strong community spirit.
“There were many, many special moments a hug, a story shared, a fight back pledge which is what makes Relay For Life more than a fundraising event,” says Ms Walker.
Michael Smith Chief Executive Cancer Society Wellington Division says funds raised will be spent in the Kāpiti region to fund various free support and information services including a Cancer Information Helpline, volunteer visiting and transport service to treatment, and support programmes. Funds will also be used to support ongoing cancer research and health promotion programmes.
Relay For Life started in America with just one person. Today, it is the world’s largest cancer fundraising event in 23 countries around the world, and 22 communities in New Zealand.
