Details of Gravel Road
Gravel Road is a Wellington-based country music band with a difference. The band has blended together an eclectic group of instruments including electric and acoustic guitars, papoose (smaller sized acoustic guitar), banjo, harmonica, and fretless acoustic bass. Together, these instruments create an extraordinarily unique sound that has been adapted by the band to suit a range of excellent and memorable music.
The “nouvelle country” sound allows Gravel Road to play its own interpretations of country songs from the likes of EmmyLou Harris, Neil Young, Vince Gill, Randy Travis, Rolling Stones, Carl Montgomery, Tom Petty, Hank Williams, John Hiatt, Delbert McLinton, Little Feat and Old Crow Medicine Show.
Gravel Road is also working on an upcoming album – Songs from the Heartland – featuring great original songs about New Zealand life and history all written by members of the band.
With tight four part harmonies and excellent musical skills Gravel Road brings an entertainment package that is innovative, dazzling and memorable. Gravel Road is on a journey of musical discovery that you will simply love.
Biographies
Lead vocalist Neil Worboys has had a lengthy career in leading New Zealand bands throughout the past few decades commencing with the Bulldogs Allstar Goodtime Band which had huge hits with Miss September and Everyone Knows during the seventies. He has played in a number of bands since that time including the popular Wellington Heads which has been on the Wellington musical scene for the past twenty years.
Aside from his uniquely powerful and gravelly voice, Neil is also a fine harp player and provides rhythm for the band through his banjo or acoustic guitar.
Lead guitarist and vocalist Dave Allen has also played in many bands through the past few decades. He plays regularly with London Underground featuring top Wellington musician Andrew London. Dave’s guitar artistry combines great feel with spectacular technical skill to deliver solos and riffs that speak to the soul.
Papoose, guitar, keyboard player and vocalist, Peter Allison is another institution on the Wellington music scene, having commenced his musical career playing in such legendary New Zealand bands as Dave McCartney and the Flamingos. Peter provides much of the unique sound of Gravel Road through the ringing treble tones and rhythms of the papoose guitar.
Bass, accordion and keyboard player, and vocalist Wayne Mills has been around the Wellington live music scene since the eighties. Originally a keyboard player with the popular Wellington covers band Four on the Floor, he changed to playing a fretless bass. Wayne also plays in popular Wellington bluegrass band Dixie Lix. His Breedlove acoustic / electric fretless bass provides a woody bass tone ideally suited to the unique blend of sound offered by Gravel Road.
