The Environmental Protect Agency decision today does not change the fact that National’s Kāpiti Expressway is flawed and a financial basket case, Labour MP for Mana Kris Faafoi said today.
“A leaked report by engineering consultants Beca showed the $515 million investment would yield a return of just $118 million over 30 years a BCR of just 0.2,” Kris Faafoi said.
“The EPA decision doesn’t change the business case for the Expressway it’s still as flawed as it was before the EPA ruling.
“National’s obsession with its highways of dubious value is sucking resources away from sensible transport projects and is the cause of the unjustified petrol tax hike, due to kick in next month,”
“The people of Kāpiti have been battling against the construction of this low-value monstrosity for years. Today’s decision will not see the fight for sensible, sustainable transport infrastructure cease.
“Kāpiti Coasters want a transport solution, just not this one that cuts through the heart of their community and is wasting millions of taxpayer dollars
“Labour called on the Government to drop the project when it was revealed it has an appallingly low benefit-to-cost ratio (BCR).
“National, the party of austerity for everyone else, is wasting tax-payers money on these low value roads. At a time when communities are looking for leadership for Government’s to spend money wisely, National’s Kāpiti Expressway is doing the opposite.
