Tuesday 14th was a big sports day on the Coast for Kāpiti schools with their annual Winter Tournament. Over 400 Year 5 and 6 students from all the local primary schools were able to choose from a range of sports that included soccer, hockey, netball and Rippa rugby. Games were spread over the sports Mazengarb grounds, the Mazengarb hockey turf, as well as Te Atiawa park and netball court. For some it was their first big interschool tournament and for others it was an opportunity to participate in a sport they had never played before. Games started about mid-day and lasted about 15 minutes before teams swapped and played another round against other teams. It was the opportunity for some children to play a sport they had not played before.
Many games were refereed by senior primary and college students, which was a positive leadership opportunity for them.
“The games went OK. Heaps of people defended really well and sadly we didn’t score,” said Thomas Couchman who was playing hockey for the first time.
Jahna Heta, a yr 5 student at Waikanae School who had played Rippa when he was at Kāpiti Primary School said “It went pretty good. We won all our games.”
