KiwiRail are will be installing new signs at a Te Horo level crossing where a Somali community leader’s car was hit by a freight train in July.
Adam Awad suffered serious head injuries and was left fighting for his life when his car was hit on a private rail crossing at Te Horo.
KiwiRail are installing new standard signage at the crossing to improve safety and say there will be on-going work with Kāpiti Coast District Council.
As a private crossing, it was up to the land owners to maintain the crossing because KiwiRail did not have a deed of grant over it, but following the accident they wanted to improve safety at the site out of good will, a spokeswoman said.
Mr Awad is still in Wellington Hospital rehabilitating.
Mr Awad’s car was dragged up to 30m when it was hit by the freight train on the unarmed crossing.
A rescue helicopter landed at the scene and transported Mr Awad to Wellington Hospital.
The crossing is on a sweeping bend and has no safety barriers.
Property owners in the area had been trying to get approval for safety improvements to the crossing for years.
