Breastfeeding is celebrated around the world every year from 1 – 7 August with World Breastfeeding Week. As part of the New Zealand celebrations, Women’s Health Action runs the Big Latch OnTM.
On Friday 3 August at 10.30am women and their babies will gather together at venues throughout the country to try to break the record for the most women breastfeeding simultaneously. An event is taking place in Kāpiti.
Wellington Wairarapa Plunket Area Manager, Tina Syme, says that deciding to breastfeed your baby is one of the most positive steps you can take towards ensuring they get the best start in life.
“Breast milk is the perfect food for infants and provides babies with all the nutrition they need for healthy growth and development. It’s the original fast food – it’s always fresh and delivered at the right temperature plus it’s free and readily available.
“Breastfeeding is a skill that requires learning for both mother and baby and there’s lots of support available for mums. PlunketLine (0800 933 922) is available 24 hours, 7 days a week or mum’s can talk to their local Plunket nurse or visit a Plunket family centre where staff and other mum’s can offer support and information in a friendly and relaxed environment.”
At 10.30am on Friday 3 August a Big Latch OnTM event is taking place at:
