Applications are now open for the 2012 Encore Awards, which honour individuals, community groups, businesses, schools and landowners whose sustained commitment to improving the environment, biodiversity and conservation is making the region a better place to live.
The awards are a partnership between the Greater Wellington Regional Council, the Wellington Hawke’s Bay Conservancy of the Department of Conservation and the Wellington Hawke’s Bay Conservation Board.
Previous winners of the Encore Awards include the Plimmerton Rotary Club for its work developing a walkway around the Pauatahanui inlet and community leader Frances Lee for more than 30 years dedicated work towards improving Trelissick Park.
They also include the Rimutaka Forest Park Trust for restoring the park’s unique flora and fauna, and the Friends of Owhiro Stream for transforming the stream into an attractive habitat for native birds and animals, as well as a place of relaxation and enjoyment for people.

2012 Award Categories
Community Partnerships Award – honouring the contribution of community groups and organisations towards conservation and environmental restoration in the region, including the protection of native plants, animals and threatened eco-systems
Kaitiaki Award honouring the sustained and significant work of individuals towards conservation and environmental restoration in the region, including the protection of native plants, animals and threatened eco-systems
Landowners’ Conservation Award – acknowledging private landowners protecting and restoring biodiversity on their land through efforts such as pest control, riparian planting and covenanting
Recreation Volunteers Award – acknowledging volunteer groups or individuals developing, maintaining and promoting outdoor recreation facilities to enhance people’s enjoyment and appreciation of the Wellington region’s natural environment
School Environmental Project Award honouring projects involving school students, teachers, parents and board members that contribute to conservation, improve the health of their environment and promote environmental education for sustainability
Excellence in Compliance Award – recognising Greater Wellington consent holders exceeding their compliance requirements to reduce or avoid adverse effects on the environment
Environmental Protection Award recognising businesses and individuals preventing pollution, reducing their environmental impact and making a contribution to environmental restoration and conservation.
