Organ Donation New Zealand, in conjunction with Kidney Health New Zealand is organising Kidney Awareness Week and the theme this year is Transplantation and Organ Donation of all organs, not just kidneys.
Waikanae Ward councillor Tony Lloyd said the aim of the week is to raise awareness about organ donation and transplantation and encourage people to have conversations with their families about their wishes should the possibility of organ donation arise, either as a donor or as a recipient.
“On Thurday March 8, transplant recipients throughout New Zealand will be saying thank you to their donor, donor family, health professionals and also family, friends, workmates and employers.
“In Kāpiti we will be marking this special occasion by planting freesia bulbs. These will represent the new beginning they have been given thanks to the generosity of others,” said Cr Lloyd.
The planting will take place in the Memorial Gardens, Elizabeth St, Waikanae at 12 noon, March 8.
Members of the public are invited to attend to support the transplant recipients attending.
