Home baking and food donations from Waikanae have been personally delivered to Christchurch rescue workers and a welfare centre by Ōtaki MP Nathan Guy last Friday.
“I’m extremely proud of local residents who are so determined to help Christchurch in their time of need. Jill and Noel Phillips drove from Waikanae to meet me in Wellington at 5:30am on Friday, so that I could take these supplies to Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) workers and the welfare centre at Burnside High School.
“Mrs Phillips and friends prepared 20 homemade fruit cakes, along with boxes of biscuits donated by Waikanae Countdown. The USAR teams are working around the clock and were very appreciative of this gesture.”
Mr Guy spent Friday in Christchurch in his role as Minister of Internal Affairs, observing recovery efforts and thanking firefighters for their tireless work.
“Seeing the devastation first hand was a very sobering experience. Christchurch has suffered a terrible blow but the support from around New Zealand, and the world, is making a difference.
“Thank you to everyone in Horowhenua and Kāpiti who have offered their help. I’m proud of how New Zealanders have pulled together to help those going through such a tough time.”
Prime Minister John Key has launched the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, a global fundraiser for the recovery effort in the city and the Canterbury region.
“This new appeal gives people another means of donating to the recovery effort. It is designed to complement those already established, such as the funds organised by the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
“Every donation helps, no matter how small.”
