Ōtaki MP Nathan Guy has congratulated local mayors Jenny Rowan and Brendan Duffy on their re-elections, and welcomed the public support shown for the Kāpiti expressway.
“Jenny Rowan and Brendan Duffy are hard working mayors and have done well to be re-elected. I have a good working relationship with them both and I’m looking forward to carrying this on.”
“With only one councillor vacancy filled in Horowhenua it will be pretty much business as usual with the same experienced group back sitting around the table.”
Mr Guy says the election of seven new councillors in Kāpiti who are largely supportive of the expressway is a huge public endorsement of the roading upgrade.
“Voters in Kāpiti had plenty of choice with many candidates choosing to campaign against the expressway, but it’s clear Kāpiti voters want positive infrastructure progress and rejected all of the anti-road critics.
“Improving our roading network is a huge priority for Kāpiti and I’m pleased we have councillors willing to take a constructive approach. It’s important that both local councils work with NZTA and the Government for the benefit of their districts.
“The expressway is going ahead. My focus is now on working with the community to get the interchanges in the right place and the best final design.”
Mr Guy says the relationship between central and local government is important and he looks forward to continuing to help provide that important link.
“I wish both councils well in the next three years.”
