This season the Waikanae Pool will open on Monday November 8 and will stay open until Sunday April 17 2011, Council’s Leisure & Open Space Asset Manager, Lex Bartlett said today.
“This is later than the previous Labour Weekend opening time but in recent years the weather then has been very unsettled, cold, wet and windy and not conducive to outdoor pool use.
“Most outdoor pools in New Zealand open around the second week in November due to normally improved weather.
“The later opening however means we will stay open for longer at the other end of the season, a total of 23 weeks, which is longer than normal.
“While we would like the option to stay open even longer in April to take advantage of what are often “Indian Summer” conditions at that time and cover all of the school holidays, our budget to cover pool operational and the pool management contract costs will not allow us to do this unfortunately,” Mr Bartlett said.
“Long range forecasts from NIWA and the MetService are predicting a good summer and that should mean families will be able to get the maximum enjoyment out of the pool during the time it is open,” Mr Bartlett said.
“Let’s hope the forecasters are right!”
