Kāpiti Coast District Mayor Jenny Rowan is urging Kāpiti Coast residents to support the Red Cross Appeal for victims of the Canterbury earthquake.
People can make a donation to the Red Cross Canterbury Earthquake Appeal either at an ANZ branch (account number: 1839-0188939-00) or at The National Bank (account number: 06-0869-0548507-00). You can also donate on-line at www.redcross.org.nz/donate.
“We well remember the generosity of people around the country at the time of the Paekākāariki floods in 2003. Now it’s our turn to return the favour and put our hands in our pockets to support the victims of the earthquake.
“Whether or not people were prepared for the disaster, it’s the time it takes to recover once the shock of the initial quake is over and people begin to take stock of their situations which is the real problem.
“Wellingtonians are used to living with the idea that the so-called Big One may strike at any time but when these sorts of events happen they’re a real wake up call.
“I know many of us will have taken another look at how well prepared we are for an event like this and it’s sobering to realise there are probably a number of things we could do better.
“So, while we’re making sure we are prepared, let’s also consider the people in Canterbury and contribute generously to the Red Cross Appeal.
