The Kāpiti Community Recreational Turf Trust received another boost recently when Trust Chair, Roger Sowry, was presented with a cheque for $50,000 by Ray and Alison McKimm, owners of Big Save Furniture.
“Kāpiti is the home of Big Save and we are thrilled to be able to help, having grown up here (in Kāpiti) and we are very proud of what has been achieved” said Ray McKimm.
Mr Sowry commented that “Big Save have been the largest providers of private funds for stage 1, the construction of the Turf. This payment is the final tranche of a 3 year sponsorship and will allow payment of retentions to contractors for stage 1”.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Mayor Jenny Rowan applauded the generosity of the McKimm’s and thanked them for their commitment to Kāpiti. Mayor Rowan also announced that following a submission to the Annual District Plan by the Trust, Council is fully supportive of the project and has decided to underwrite fundraising for stage 2 of the Turf development, construction of facilities at the Turf.
This will mean that National and International games will be able to be held at the Turf. Trust Chair Mr Sowry commented “Once the new facilities, including changing rooms, offices and social areas are completed, they will be a fantastic asset for the Kāpiti community”.
