Gear Jammers show brings huge crowds
For the second weekend in a row thousands turned out in brilliant weather for show time at Kāpiti School.
Last week it was the Sustainable home and garden show. This time it was the Gear Jammers rally and show. A crowd, estimated at 3000, saw a huge range of cars, many vintage, some veteran, but all in mint condition.
Kāpiti Gear Jammers club secretary Carolyn Martin said this was the third year the show has been held at the school and it gets bigger every year.
“We have around 260 cars here this year and we may need a bigger venue next year if it continues to expand at this rate.
The popularity of the show was underscored by club president Gavin Wellborne who said 100 more cars turned up than last year.
“We also had about 100 cars in the Car Run this morning. We started at the Waikanae Hotel, went south to Raumati and up through Paraparaumu to the Kāpiti School. We may get a couple of complaints about filling up the roads but it only happens once a year.”
The irony of this show after the sustainability show last week was not lost on Mr Wellborne. “Yeah, I guess we’re their carbon footprint. But the fact is people still love these cars. Look around, there are thousands here having a great time.”
To qualify for the rally cars must be either USA or Australian built and be 6 cylinder or V8. There was no charge for participants.
Mr Wellborne said the club has events most weekends and new members are welcome.
