Twelve wonderful local gardens chosen for their range of beauty and variety will be on display in this summer's Waikanae Lions Super Garden Trail that is being held the weekend following Wellington Anniversary Day to avoid the congestion of holiday traffic.

This summer's Garden Trail provides a rare opportunity to view exceptional gardens ranging from attractive cottage gardens to enchanting compact town gardens to spacious lifestyle retreats with expansive lawns and special features.

The Trail includes the garden of Julian Matthews who is one of New Zealand's leading gardening writers and a former longtime editor of The Gardener magazine. This is a large garden of contrasting sun and shade areas with the emphasis on foliage plants. There are contrasting themes here - an historic, sunken, brick edged pond in one area, while around the corner is a modern courtyard with exuberant subtropical style plantings. He has a magnificent garden full of foliage plants.

Another garden new to the Lions Garden Trail is that of Morag and Kevin Woodley's which is set in almost an acre of section with an outlook over Waikanae Park, This garden has a wide variety of different plantings. Silver birches, ligularia, clivia and camellias form the driveway garden and then roses, dahlias and other colourful specimens surround a large courtyard, lawn and patio area. Fruit trees and a kohekohe forest that leads onto a petanque court and gazebo round out the different aspects of this garden.

The annual Waikanae Lions Super Garden Trail has been a very popular event for garden lovers throughout the lower North Is and has raised in excess of $500,000 for many charities. This year the funds raised will be donated to the Wellington Free Ambulance and the Alzheimers Society for use in the Kapiti district.

Morning and afternoon teas and light lunches will also be available at 42 Ngarara Road to provide a restful garden experience with the proceeds going to The Cancer Society. By taking part in the "discover the plants" and "lucky ticket" competitions, visitors could win one of ten prizes for $50 plant selections or six $100 Gardening Gift Cards.

Tickets for the Garden Trail and a brochure showing the location of each garden are available from Palmers Gardenworld Coastlands Paraparaumu, Gus Evans Waikanae, Harrisons Garden World Pekapeka or Twiglands Garden World Johnsonville or from any of the gardens on the weekend of the Garden Trail. A sales kiosk will also be located on the corner of Te Moana Rd and Koromiko St, Waikanae during the weekend of the Garden Trail.

Tickets can also be pre purchased by internet banking by emailing popone@xtra.co.nz or telephoning 04 2936607.

The gardens will be open from 10am until 5pm each day.
