Book it up for Christmas.....

Despite the mountain of technology in ipads, iphones, iwhatevers, there is still a huge demand for the good old (or new) book.

Christmas is nearly here and despite tales of retail doom and gloom it doesn't seem to have affected the bookshops who report a brisk trade.

KCNews spoke to Rob Clarke from Paper Plus in Coastlands.

"We have been very busy. It's going really well and December has been very steady. Now the election and the Rugby World Cup are over life is getting back to normal and people have a bit more time for reading."

Mr Clarke said there seems no downturn in the popularity of books with sales this year as good as ever.

"Books are a great gift and as a gift they are intrinsically flattering. Giving a book shows you respect a person's intelligence and intellectual curiosity. And better still they don't need batteries," says Mr Clarke.

"There is also a broad price range and plenty of bargains so it suits everyone."

The value of a book compared to its cost makes it an ideal gift for Christmas. Looks like large numbers of Kapiti Coasters agree.

I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book. Groucho Marx

The person who does not read good books has no advantage over the person who can't read them. Mark Twain, attributed
